Distant 和 remote 這兩個形容詞的意思大多重疊，亦即大多可以互換，僅在 in the not too distant past/future 這一固定用語中須用 distant，但在沒有 not too 的 in the distant/remote past/future 中，兩者卻又可互換，因此，在使用上須特別注意。
Distant 意為「(空間) 遙遠的；遠處的；有距離的 (時間) 遙遠的；久遠的 (人際關係) 疏遠的；冷淡的」，指在空間中相隔距離的遙遠或時間上的久遠，如 That village is about twenty kilometers distant. (那個村莊遠在二十公里外)；My grandfather lives in a distant town. (我祖父住在一個遙遠的城鎮)；We went there in the not too distant past. (我們在不久之前去過那裡)。
Remote 意為「(空間) 偏遠的；偏僻的；遙遠的 (時間) 遙遠的；久遠的 (人際關係) 疏遠的；冷淡的」，指在空間中相隔距離的遙遠或時間上的久遠，而在空間上則強調偏僻、偏遠，如 The idea of marrying a supermodel seems so remote I can hardly even imagine it. (娶超模為妻的念頭似乎太遙遠了，我連想都沒想)；His uncle lives in a remote village. (他伯父住在一個偏僻的村莊)；That tragedy happened in the remote past. (那悲劇發生在久遠的過去)。
綜上所述，在表示空間距離時，remote 是指很遠很遠，強調偏僻、偏遠，如 My ancestors were from a remote village in China. (我的祖先來自中國一個偏僻的鄉村)；My ancestors were from a distant city in China. (我的祖先來自中國一個遙遠的城市)。最後，再強調一次，在類似 I expect to study abroad in the not too distant future. (我預計在不久的將來出國留學) 這樣的句子中，吾人只能使用 distant，不可用 remote，因為 in the not too distant past/future 為固定用語。
