The vast majority of Americans say they are afraid of one of the two major candidates — Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump — winning the White House, a remarkable finding that reflects an unsettled nation unhappy with its choice.

Eighty-one percent of Americans say they would feel afraid following the election of one of the two politicians, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. That includes a quarter who say it doesn’t matter who wins because they’re scared of both.

Only 22 percent of respondents said they would be proud to have a President Trump, while only 27 percent said the same about Clinton. Nearly 80 percent of respondents said they are not hopeful about the current state and direction of the United States.

Three-quarters of respondents said they consider Trump only slightly or not at all civil, while half said he is somewhat racist. As for Clinton, 75 percent of respondents said she is only slightly or not at all honest.
