Major global sports competitions to enjoy in the New Year

Winter Olympics

The 22nd Winter Olympics will take place from Feb. 6 to 23 in Sochi, Russia. It will be the first Olympics hosted by Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Hundreds of international athletes will participate in winter sports such as figure skating, alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and short track speed skating.

Three quintessential Northern European animals — the Polar Bear, the European Hare and the Amur Leopard — were picked by voters as the official mascots for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

As of October 2013, the estimated cost of the event totaled more than US$51 billion (approximately NT$1.5 trillion), meaning the 2014 Winter Olympics has surpassed even the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, which had an estimated cost of around US$44 billion (approximately NT$1.3 trillion), as the most expensive Olympic Games in history. The Games will feature the newly built Olympic Park with a total of 11 new sports venues.
