會議進行到一半，外籍同事Wilson忽然轉頭小聲告訴志明他必須去 ”answer call of nature”，由於接下來就輪到他們這個部門上台做簡報，志明很不希望Wilson離席，忍不住追問：”Who’s calling you？Could you call him back after the presentation？” 只見對方面有難色，說了句：”Sorry, I really need to relieve myself. I’ll be right back.” 就迅速走出去，留下志明一臉困惑…...

”call of nature” 可不是什麼大自然的呼喚，”relieve oneself” 也不是放輕鬆一下，這兩個用語都是「上廁所」的文雅說法：

Could you excuse me for a minute？Nature calls.（可以容我離開一下嗎？去個洗手間。）
I need to relieve myself. Could you please wait here？（我需要去上廁所，請你在這裡等一下好嗎？）

此外，如果聽到英美人士說：”I have to go.” 而沒有進一步解釋時，就別傻傻追問：”Where are you going？” 因為對方多半表示「失陪一下」，要去上廁所，而非真的要離開。

其他關於「上廁所」的委婉說法，還有：

1. I’m going to use the bathroom/washroom/lavatory.（我要去用一下洗手間。）
2. Please show me the men’s/gent’s room.（請告訴我男廁的位置。）
3. Could you tell me where the women’s/ladies’ room is please？（可以請你告訴我化妝間在哪裡嗎？）
4.Allow me to powder my nose.（容我去補個妝。）

假設在某些特殊情境中，需要明確說出要去上大號還是小號，卻又不想把shit、piss等字眼說出口，你也可以這麼講：

For the examination, he needs to make a bowel movement.（為了作檢查，他需要去排便。）

說明：bowel是「腸」，bowel movement就是「腸子的活動」，也就是「解大便」的斯文說法。

I’ve got to find a place for my son to make water as soon as possible.（我得盡快幫我兒子找個地方小便。）

說明：make water、pass water，或前述的relieve oneself都是「小便」的意思。
