An active bomb-sniffing dog, also the father of South Korea’s first cloned police dogs, will retire next week from the Jeju Provincial Police Agency after serving for 11 years, police officials said Thursday.
The police will hold a ceremony Tuesday to mark the retirement of the German shepherd Quinn, who was deployed to the police in April 2005, just three months after his birth.
Quinn made headlines in April 2007 when he helped solve a high-profile child murder case that shocked South Korea’s resort island of Jeju. The search dog, which had been trained for only three days to detect human scent, pulled off the feat of finding the victim’s body in an orchard in just 20 minutes.
His talent as a seasoned police dog possessing a keen sense of smell has been utilized on more than 200 major missions, such as the 2005 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation （APEC） summit. He also won awards in several national competitions for bomb-sniffing.
Quinn provided somatic cells for a cloned dog named Su that researchers at Sooam Biotech Research Center delivered in 2010. Su, also dispatched to the Jeju police, has displayed outstanding olfactory abilities inherited from Quinn and has helped police in search and detection missions.
At Tuesday’s ceremony, the police will confer an honorary rank of lieutenant on Quinn in recognition of his contribution to the country and cede him to a new master.
