Babies with big heads are more likely to be clever and have successful futures, a study has shown. The research has linked the size of a child’s head with their academic achievements later on in life, finding that babies born with larger heads are more likely to get a degree, as well as score higher on verbal-numerical reasoning tests.
The data used in the study was gathered from UK Biobank, which stores data from 502,655 people. They were recruited between 2006 and 2010 in the UK and underwent cognitive and physical assessments, provided blood, urine and saliva samples for future analysis.
During their analysis, the researchers found that babies born with a head circumference larger than the average of 13.5-14 inches were likely to exhibit greater intelligence later in their lives. The study, published in the journal of Molecular Psychiatry, found 17 ’significant’ genes that affect brain function and impact on people’s physical and mental health.
The study was led by Professor Ian Deary of Edinburgh University, who said that gene variants were also strongly associated with intelligence.
