4. Some people have a hard time understanding what 'Glass Only' means.

人們就是無法了解這塊寫著 "Glass Only" 的牌子代表什麼意思。

很多人都有類似的經驗吧？明明牌子上寫的，"No Glass" 就是會有人把玻璃丟進去，明明是 "Glass Only" 又會有人把非玻璃的東西給混雜其中。我每次看到這種情況，也只會說，"How can people do that?" ，不然就是只能搖頭苦笑走開。後來有一次 Katie 看到了，她是個很有正義感的人，她一邊撿起不應屬於這裏的垃圾，一邊氣憤地跟我說，"People have a hard time understanding what 'Glass Only' means." 是不是她這樣子的表達方式聽起來通順多了，各位覺不覺得呢？

在上面的例句中， Katie 小妹妹用了have a hard time 是個片語，意即有困難，也就相當於 have difficulty (in) V-ing 這個片語。同樣的句型我們可以用在其它的場合。比方說你坐在非吸煙區，偏偏就是有人要抽煙，這時候你就可以來一句，"People have a hard time understanding what 'No smoking' means." 或是 "People have difficulty understanding what 'No smoking' means." 這樣的講法，遠比平鋪直述地說，"How can people smoke here?" 來得生動有趣地多了。
