A Snohomish County senior citizen has earned the nickname "the AARP Ninja" by fighting off a would-be thief.

Buzz Biechler, 66, was walking home from the Walgreens drug store, when two suspicious men caught his eye. One nearly clipped him on a bicycle, he said, which drew his attention to the second one barreling towards him.

"He had (a large piece of wood) raised like this," Biechler said, motioning. "He was running at me full assault. I don’t know. I don’t have anything to steal. I didn’t know what he wanted."

Biechler has Diabetes, a heart condition, Hepatitis C, and one eye. He made a split-second decision to use the cane he walks with to fend off his attacker, hitting him once in the stomach and once on the ankle.

"I kind of feel for the guy. I know what he’s going through," Biechler said, "but at the same time, It’s kind of like, ’don’t tread on me.’"
