Tourists have been flocking to a secluded railway depot here after it was announced that the 72-year-old station will be shut down this fall.

Located between two tunnels that pass through cliffs facing the sea, Koboro Station on the JR Muroran Line is known among railway buffs as a "hikyoeki" (station in a rarely visited area).

Koboro Station opened in 1943 as a "shingojo"(signal place), where trains wait for other trains to pass. Currently, eight local trains stop at the station each day. However, few people use the depot. According to the Toyoura town government, the population in the remote area dwindled away and disappeared by the mid-1970s.

This summer, however, many tourists are visiting the station during the midsummer Bon holidays as Hokkaido Railway Co.(JR Hokkaido), operator of the Muroran Line, told the town government that it will close the depot at the end of October at the earliest.
