Most school songs in South Korea still have lyrics more suited to the 1970s, but some are moving recently to reflect student’s changing tastes by incorporating rapping and English lyrics and focusing on new values such as diversity. An active culture of students themselves arranging and recording their school songs or composing class songs is also taking shape.
The school song lyrics for Wiryebyeol Elementary School in Seoul’s Songpa district emphasize diversity, with passages like "We build warm hearts by recognizing difference and understanding each other."
Other schools focus more on religious values or elite performance as a reflection of their founders’ philosophy. The Youth Music Media Playground at Seoul’s Yeongdeungpo Youth Square includes facilities where students can arrange and record their own school songs. In March, the Love of Our School Song Project was launched, with some students recording versions of new songs.
"The students who come by want to change it to give it new lyrics and a new melody," explained Seo Myeong-deuk, a team leader at the Youth Culture House in Yeongdeungpo.
