Why the world's biggest pop stars are creating movies of their concert performances

Concert movies are hardly a new idea. Film footage of pop concerts has been appearing in movie theaters for decades; however, there can be little doubt that this type of film has become far more popular in recent times.

In just the last few years, a large number of major pop stars have released concert movies, a la "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" (2008), "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" (2011) and "Katy Perry: Part of Me" (2012). And this year, movie theaters are more clogged than ever with footage of pop stars' performances.

On Aug. 30, concert movies by both One Direction and Big Bang — "One Direction: This Is Us" and "Big Bang Alive Galaxy World Tour" — were released in movie theaters here, while Taiwanese superstars Mayday will release their concert film, "Mayday Nowhere 3D," on Sept. 18. So, what's behind the sudden popularity of these films?

The rise of concert movies is partly due to the globalization of the music industry. Unlike in the past, today's major pop groups have legions of fans around the world, making concert movies much more profitable. Big Bang, for example, has a global fan base fervent enough to demand that their idols' popularity be captured on film right now — something that wasn't previously technically possible, but which now can be easily done. Experts also point to the growth of 3D cinema, which can give moviegoers an experience much closer to that of attending an actual concert.

As these films become more financially successful, well-known filmmakers are stepping forward to direct them, ensuring audiences enjoy a much higher-quality movie-going experience. If all actors want to be directors, maybe all directors want to be rock stars — or at least to make movies about them: Even filmmakers who enjoy their own brand of pop stardom find it impossible to resist when the real thing comes calling.

The release of "One Direction: This Is Us" marks perhaps the biggest collaboration in recent years between a well-regarded moviemaker, in this case Morgan Spurlock, and a pop phenomenon, in this case the English-Irish boy band made up of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.
