這兩個形容詞都意為可能的，但兩者的用法及所表示的可能性大小卻有頗大的差異，實有加以探究的必要。等學會了區別它們之間的不同後，您自然就會瞭解 “It is not only possible, it is probable." (那不僅是可能的，而且是很可能發生的) 這個「名句」中 possible 和 probable 的用法及含意。
Possible 意為「可能的；可能做到的」，表示可能性大於 0，除了不可能發生的事情之外，任何事情都是 possible，但發生的機率小於 probable，如 Mary told me that she would do everything possible to get married to Sam. (瑪麗告訴我，她將盡一切可能嫁給山姆)；It is possible that I might be the CEO of that big company one day. (有朝一日或許我可以成為那家大公司的執行長)；Wendy goes on a trip abroad whenever possible. (任何可能的時候，溫蒂都會出國旅遊)；It’s no longer possible to find a cheap apartment in Taipei. (現今要在台北找到廉價的公寓再也不可能了)。
Probable 意為「很可能的；很可能發生的；很可能真實的」，表示可能性十之八九，至少都會超過五成、甚至六成或七成，因此發生的機率大於不發生的機率，如 Christopher is a probable presidential candidate. (克里斯多福是很有希望的總統候選人)；It is very probable that it will rain tonight. (今晚很可能會下雨)；It is highly probable that she will find a new job this year. (她今年很可能找新的工作)；A civil war in Egypt seems highly probable. (埃及的內戰似乎很有可能發生)。
必須注意的是，儘管 probable 與 likely 同義，但 probable 不可與帶 to 的不定詞連用。綜言之，likely、possible 和 probable 皆可用於 It is likely/possible/probable that + 子句的句型，但其中只有 likely 和 possible 可用於 likely/possible to do 的句型。是故，像 It is probable to happen. (事情很可能會發生) 這樣的句子是錯誤的，因為 probable 不可與帶 to 的不定詞連用。
