Experience the inspiring true story of Taiwan's Sleepy Dads rock band

A touching film about determination, passion and love does not have to come from the mind of a Hollywood screenwriter. Often, the most moving films are true stories about real people fighting for who and what they love.

"Rock Me to the Moon" is a Taiwanese documentary that tells the story of six fathers who have children that suffer from extremely rare diseases. These fathers lead exhausting lives as they try to make ends meet and take care of their families amid challenges most of us can hardly imagine.

In "Rock Me to the Moon," we follow the six fathers as they come together to form a rock band called the Sleepy Dads and watch as their dreams of playing music bring them closer together. With a combined age of more than 300 years, the members of the Sleepy Dads are: Pan Yu-gang, who plays the saxophone; Wu Jin-hui, who plays the keyboard; vocalist Ouyang Dong-lin; Zheng Chun-sheng on bass; guitarist Li Zheng-de; and Tsai Yong-da on the drums.

Tsai's son has Prader-Willi syndrome — a disorder that causes patients to feel like they are in a constant state of hunger. Ouyang, a father of three, takes care of his family in which his wife and his youngest daughter both have Glanzmann Thrombasthenia, a condition that slows or prevents the clotting of blood. These fathers originally met at the Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders, where they were part of a choir.

After forming their rock band, the members of the Sleepy Dads, who had little or no musical background, were coached by Chen Ju-shan from the rock band Backquarter. Chen wanted to help them achieve their dream of performing at the Ho Hai Yan Gongliao Rock Festival.

"Rock Me to the Moon" director Huang Jia-jun said in a recent interview that he started filming the documentary in 2008. Huang explained that in most stories about families with sick children, the spotlight is shone on the mothers. Huang said he wanted to show audiences another side of real Taiwanese men.

The name of the band came from the idea that all the fathers are so busy working to support their families or tending to the needs of their sick children that they never have time for themselves — let alone time to sleep. This was a something they could all relate to and therefore all six fathers agreed on the name Sleepy Dads.

Backquarter vocalist Chen not only coached the Sleepy Dads but also composed a total of five songs for the unique band, including "I Love You" and "Your Smile." The inspiration for "Your Smile," said Chen, came from hearing that the fathers, no matter how stressed, exhausted or frustrated they feel, believe that everything they go through is worth it just to see their children smile at them.

Even after their successful performance at the festival and the making of the movie, the Sleepy Dads still have band practice every Thursday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. This is the part of the week the dads really look forward to as it is the only time in their lives when they have time for themselves. It is a break that each of them has earned due to the love and dedication they show to their families.
