Entertainer of the Year

In July of this year, a South Korean singer called Psy released a song called "Gangnam Style." Sung primarily in Korean, few people, if anyone, could have anticipated what would happen next. The video for "Gangnam Style" went on to become the biggest cultural phenomenon of the year, garnering over 1 billion hits on YouTube. However, Psy's importance goes beyond the success of his song. He is a symbol of the emergence of a truly global culture, where any person from any country can become an international superstar.

Activist of the Year

When people think of true courage, one face comes to the minds of many — that of Malala Yousafzai. The fact that it is the face of a teenage girl makes it all the more remarkable. Yousafzai rose to fame by writing a blog for the BBC about life under the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat valley. Yousafzai promoted education for girls and for this "crime," Taliban gunmen shot her in the head on her school bus. Miraculously, she survived. And if the Taliban hoped that the shooting would end her campaign, they were wrong. The issue of education for girls received global attention because of Yousafzai's incredible bravery.

Cultural Icon of the Year

A year ago, the term "Linsanity" wouldn't have meant anything to anyone. Today, billions of people around the world are familiar with it. NBA player Jeremy Lin is a true underdog, someone who endured many tough days before he achieved global superstardom. And what has impressed people most about this young athlete is his attitude toward his celebrity. He has not grown arrogant, but has stayed true to himself and his beliefs. For these reasons, he has become an inspiration to millions.

Business Leader of the Year

In these dark economic days, Morris Chang has proven himself to be a role model. In spite of the current economic downturn, Chang, the founder and chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, has guaranteed his employees that there won't be any layoffs, regardless of the economic circumstances. Moreover, he also awarded each employee a bonus of around NT$12,000, costing a total of NT$330 million. If we are to avoid another global economic crisis, we will need more business leaders like Chang, who care as much about the society they live in as the bottom lines of their companies.

Sportsperson of the Year

Choosing a single athlete to honor is very difficult in an Olympic year; however, one athlete captured the attention of the world for reasons beyond winning medals. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Oscar Pistorius became the first double leg amputee to participate in the Olympics when he entered the men's 400 meters race and was part of South Africa's

4×400 meters relay team. Pistorius is a powerful symbol of the important role that every single person can play in our society, regardless of any mental or physical disabilities that he or she may have.
