Empty 和 vacant 這兩個形容詞都有「空的」意思，但它們的含意和用法不盡相同。不過，兩者都可用來表示「(心靈、精神上) 空虛的」，此時它們是同義詞，可以互換。
Empty 意為「空的，空空的」，表示其中沒有東西、空無一物或一人、空空的，可修飾 box, vessel, cupboard, bag, purse, room, house, street, stomach 等詞，如 There are a lot of empty boxes on the table. (桌上有許多空盒子)；The streets were almost empty on early Sunday morning. (星期天清晨街上幾乎空無一人)；His pockets were empty. (他的口袋空空如也)。
Vacant 意為「空的，空洞的」表示 (座位、房間、旅館房間等) 空著的、未被佔用的、無人使用的；(職位) 空缺的，可修飾 seat, room, house, apartment, position 等詞，如 The house has been vacant since two years ago. (自兩年前以來這棟房子就沒人住了)；That managerial position remains vacant. (那個經理職位仍然空著)；There are still several vacant places in the parking lot. (停車場還有幾個空位)。
因此，empty 和 vacant 即使接同一名詞，它們的含意也往往不同。試比較下面兩句：
- There are two empty houses in that street. (那條街上有兩間空屋) － empty house 是指裡面無人居住，也沒有家具或其他東西的空房子。
- There are two vacant houses in that street. (那條街上有兩間空屋) － vacant house 是指裡面可能有家具或其他東西，但現在沒有人住的空房子。
除上述意思外，empty 還意為「(心靈、精神上) 空虛的；(言語、承諾) 空洞的」，而 vacant 還意為「(心靈、精神上) 空虛的；(神情) 茫然的」。就「(心靈、精神上) 空虛的」意思而言，empty 和 vacant 為同義詞，如 The general doesn’t want to retire and lead an empty/a vacant life. (這位將軍不想退休過著空虛的生活)。
