Asa Butterfield was the actor Hollywood was waiting for to adapt this beloved novel
Asa Butterfield is "a massive science fiction fan," he said, which is a good thing considering Martin Scorsese plucked him from relative obscurity to take the title role in the 2011 3D fantasy adventure film "Hugo."
But Butterfield's love of sci-fi really paid off when he landed the second title role of his young career. In "Ender's Game," which will be released on Dec. 20 in Taiwan, he plays Ender Wiggin, the hero of the movie based on author Orson Scott Card's popular young adult novel.
The story is set 50 years after a devastating battle with an alien race. Earth is on permanent military alert and Ender is a student in the military school that prepares children to lead a counterattack against the ant-like aliens, called Formics. His older siblings didn't qualify for the program; his sister was too kindhearted, while his brother was too aggressive. In Ender, the mix is just right. He's sensitive enough to understand the enemy, and ruthless enough to use that understanding to defeat them. Plus, he's a genius at computer combat games.
J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series was published years after Card's novel, but it came to the screen first, with many similar scenes and situations. There's a sense of déjà vu here as we're marched through the off-Earth boarding school where the students are divided into rival groups and compete in Quidditch-like contests.
As the movie progresses, Ender is identified as a potential Caesar or Napoleon, a child-general with the reflexes, intelligence and instincts to be Earth's greatest military leader. "Ender's Game" is about this video-game trained military leader growing up during his harsh training, and the compassion and guilt that develop as he is trained to do what Earth needs him to do to ensure humanity's survival.
"He's the most complex character I've played because he's pure, but there's so much going on inside him," Butterfield said. "He's pure at the beginning and someone I'd call kind of broken at the end of the film. For me, because the character has such great instincts, such great understanding of himself and others around him, he has kind of reached this stage of development that no one else has."
