The Games, however, has also been troubled by controversies including alleged corruption, environmental pollution and the mistreatment of the LGBT community by the Russian government. Two recent suicide bombings in the Russian city of Volgograd, one in October and another in December, have also raised serious concerns about the security of the Games. With anticipation for the Games at an all-time high, Russia will be hoping that its massive security operation will be enough to ensure that the country hosts an event worthy of its unparalleled investment.

FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is one of the most widely watched sporting events in the world. Held every four years, the World Cup gathers men's national teams in a monthlong soccer extravaganza. The 2014 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 12 to July 13 and is being held in Brazil — the spiritual home of the sport in the eyes of many.

A total of 32 teams have advanced through the qualification competitions that began in June 2011 and were drawn into eight groups. Host nation Brazil are the favorites for the tournament, though the team will have to manage the massive expectations of their often unforgiving fans. Many eyes will also be on Argentina to see whether global superstar Lionel Messi can lead his nation to glory.

This tournament will also mark the first time that officials have decided to adopt electronic goal-line technology to help referees judge whether or not the ball has crossed the goal line.
