A librarian’s tweet aimed at saving the lives of children terrified of returning to school after the summer holidays has gone viral on social media.
Maho Kawai, a 44-year-old librarian at Kamakura City Central Library, offered a place of escape for children facing bullying and other problems at their schools in her tweet posted on Aug. 26.
She said she was prompted by a news report that said child suicides tend to spike on Sept. 1, the day the second semester starts at most Japanese schools.
"The second semester is set to start soon, children who are scared to death of attending school again should skip classes and come to this library," Kawai wrote in the tweet.
Her message, tweeted under the name of the city-run libraries, was retweeted more than 40,000 times within 13 hours.
Kawai’s tweet noted that abundant comics and light novels for children and young adults were waiting for them at a library. In addition, libraries are bound by rules not to disclose users’ identifications.
