英文字很多，一般分為美式跟英式兩種不同用法。一些像是bathroom、ladies room、men's room與restroom在美式及英式都會經常用到。大部分飛機的廁所使用"the lavatory"。你會聽到空服員這樣說"The lavatory is located at the back of the plane"(機倉後座廁所已鎖)。
正式說法中，你可以這樣說"Excuse me, where can I find the ladies room?"(很抱歉，請問女廁在哪裡？)、"Excuse me, could you show me where the restroom is?"(很抱歉，你可以告訴我洗手間在哪裡？)或如果你在別人家，你可以這樣問"Sorry, where’s the bathroom?"(很抱歉，廁所在哪裡？)
當你跟朋友聚會通常不會很正式，可使用： the john (男廁)、the can(廁所)、the loo (女廁) 及TP也就是衛生紙。
Tom: Hey, Sam. Where’s the john? (嗨 Sam，廁所在哪裡？)
Sam: It's down the hall.(沿著大廳往下走。)
Mary: Hi Sam. Where's Tom? (嗨 Sam，Tom在哪裡？)
Sam: Oh, he's in the can. (喔，他在廁所。)
另一個說法女士在找廁所"Excuse me, while I go powder my nose"(不好意思，我要去補補妝).
當然，最直接的問法就是"Where's the toilet?"(廁所在哪裡？)，表示廁所有很多說法，不同聽眾，選擇適當詞彙是很重要的。
