當複合名詞 (compound nouns) 中的字是由連字號結合在一起 (如 daughter-in-law, forget-me-not) 或者當複合名詞是由兩個或以上的字 (如 dry dock, lieutenant colonel) 所構成時，該複合名詞通常是以在其主要字後面加 s 的方式來構成複數。若複合名詞中沒有主要字或者複合名詞為單一個字 (如 banknote, paperclip)，那麼一般的規則是在該複合名詞的後面加 s 來構成複數。例如：

• Wendy now has two sons-in-law. (溫蒂現有兩個女婿) － son-in-law 的複數是在主要字 son 的後面加 s。
• They were the Knights Templar. (他們都是聖殿戰士) － Knight Templar 的複數是在主要字 Knight 的後面加 s。
• Their parents are all lieutenant colonels. (他們的父母都是陸軍中校) － lieutenant colonel 的複數是在主要字 colonel 的後面加 s。
• There are now still some courts-martial in Taiwan. (台灣現在仍有若干軍事法庭) － court-martial 的複數是在主要字 court 的後面加 s (事實上，由於有不少人認為 martial 是 court-martial 的主要字，在其後加 s 來構成複數，因此 courts-martial 或 court-martials 都可以)。
• There are seven forget-me-nots on the table. (桌上有七朵勿忘草)
• Could you please pass me two paperclips? (請遞給我兩支迴紋針好嗎？)
