當複合名詞是以「字 of 字」(如 bottle of wine) 的型態出現時，第一個字永遠是該複合名詞的主要字。例如：

當複合名詞是以「[容器]ful」(如 bucketful, cupful, handful) 的型態出現時，該複合名詞是在 -ful 的後面加 s 來構成複數。例如：

• There were three spoonsful of peanut butter left in the jar. (瓶裡還剩下三匙花生醬) (誤) － 應為 three spoonfuls。
• Two spoonfuls of sugar, please. (請放兩匙糖) (正)
• Please sprinkle two handfuls of corn on the porch for the chickens. (請在走廊撒兩把穀粒給雞吃) (正)
