Soldiers man their posts during a live fire exercise in Kinmen, yesterday. Some 375 soldiers and officers were mobilized for the exercise, firing 80 rounds from 32 artillery pieces of various calibers dating back to the World War II era. The exercise yesterday was designed to simulate a counterattack on submarines hounding R.O.C. supply ships as they approached the Kinmen coast. Most notably, the 155mm "Long Tom" howitzer, used by the United States in World War II and the Korean War, still awed spectators with its roaring barrages. (CNA)
