Mayday will celebrate its 15th anniversary with concerts in Europe, North America

Formed in the late 1990s, rock group Mayday is known for its roots as a student band and for capturing the spirit of Taiwanese youth. The band has been incredibly successful for more than a decade, selling over 1 million albums and claiming the Best Band title at the annual Golden Melody Awards in 2001, 2004, 2009 and 2012.

Mayday's popularity is not limited to Taiwan. Its Nowhere World Tour has taken the group to dozens of major Asian cities over the past two years, attracting more than 2.4 million people. The band even released a concert movie, "Mayday Nowhere 3D," of the successful tour. Now the group is hoping to find similar success in the West.

The band announced recently at a press conference in London that it will embark on a European tour next year to mark its 15th anniversary. The Europe leg of the Nowhere World Tour will take the five-man group to Britain, France and the Netherlands, marking the first time the band will perform on the continent. According to the band, the themes of the tour are love, humanity and salvation.

Mayday will kick off its first European tour in February. The "1st Time World Tour in Europe" will hit London on Feb. 21, Paris on Feb. 23 and Amsterdam on Feb. 26. The band will then embark on a tour of Canada and the U.S. in March.

For a band that renowned U.S. newspaper The Washington Post dubbed "the Chinese Beatles," performing in these major European cities is a dream come true. In fact, the members of Mayday were inspired by the Beatles — the English band that exploded onto the music scene in the early 1960s and became arguably the most successful musical group in history.

Speaking on the show "Impact" on BBC World News, Mayday vocalist and songwriter Ashin said the band members have loved The Beatles ever since they were young. The iconic British band had a "very huge and powerful" influence on them, added Stone, the lead guitarist of the five-man Taiwanese group. The members of Mayday explained that they, like the Beatles, hope to use music to make a difference for their generation.

Answering reporters' questions about their feelings on being dubbed "the Chinese Beatles," the band members said they are too humble to accept the title because they are still working hard to get their name out in Europe. However, being deeply influenced by the British band, they said that the name is a great honor.
