Broad 和 wide 這兩個形容詞的意思都是「寬闊的；寬廣的」，但它們的含意和用法不盡相同。譬如說，在 Cindy stared at her boyfriend with wide eyes. (辛蒂睜大眼睛注視著她的男友) 這句中，只能用 wide，不能用 broad。
Broad 強調兩邊之間面積的廣大，可用來形容大而平坦的區域；在形容人的臉、肩、背、胸以及植物的葉子時，通常用 broad 而不用 wide，如 My brother has broad shoulders. (我哥哥有寬闊的肩膀)；Ships sail on the broad ocean. (船隻航行於廣大的海洋上)；Henry has a desk three feet long and four feet broad/wide. (亨利有一張三英尺長四英尺寬的書桌)；This narrow winding road leads to a broad expanse of fields. (這條狹長蜿蜒的路通到一大片田野)。
Wide 為較常用字，強調從一邊到另一邊的寬度，可用來形容大部分物體、張開的物體或寬度；在形容人的口、眼睛等之大以及與 open 連用時，通常用 wide 而不用 broad，如 The roads are not wide enough for trucks. (這些道路寬度不夠卡車通行)；A wide ocean separates Europe and America. (寬闊的海洋隔開了歐洲和美洲)；The pond is about five feet wide/broad. (池塘約五英尺寬)；An earthquake shook a wide area of northern Japan earlier this month. (本月稍早一場地震搖撼了日本北部廣大地區)。
然而，在指具體事物如街道、河流時，broad 和 wide 往往可以互換，如 That’s a wide/broad river. (那是一條寬闊的河流)；My grandparents live in a very wide/broad street. (我的祖父母住在一條很寬廣的街道)。
