Honduran oil tanker YONG WIN3 founders on the southwest side of Lamay Island on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Two Coast Guard Administration vessels continued to monitor the oil tanker yesterday in an effort to prevent oil leakage. The oil tanker, loaded with 5,000 tons of diesel, tilted at a wide angle and started to sink on late Tuesday night. All the crew members have been rescued and all oil tank doors have been shut to prevent leakage. (CNA)

在中國，每年的體適能測驗數據顯示，學生在過去幾十年間愈趨遲鈍與肥胖。專家與教育界人士將這樣的衰退現象，歸因於國內對競爭激烈的大學入學考試成績的執迷，以及像是電玩與上網等室內活動的流行。中國教育部的數據顯示，在二○一○年，男大生跑一千公尺的速度平均比十年前的成績慢了十四至十五秒，女大生跑八百公尺則慢了十二秒左右。

The decline in fitness seems to be leveling off in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and perhaps in the last few years in North America. However, it continues to fall in China. About 20 million of the 25 million children in the studies were from Asia.

In China, annual fitness test data show the country's students have been getting slower and fatter over the past couple of decades. Experts and educators blame an obsession with academic testing scores for China's competitive college admissions, as well as the popularity of indoor activities like gaming and Web surfing, for the decline. Data from China's Education Ministry show that in 2010 male college students ran 1,000 meters 14 to 15 seconds slower on average than male students did a decade earlier. Female students slowed by about 12 seconds in an 800-meter run.

Staying optimistic is known to increase the odds of survival, and appearance can have an outsized impact. Thus the program's theme, "Hope is beautiful."

Daiana Castro, a 23-year-old hairstylist with ovarian cancer, was traumatized at first. "I had red hair, beautiful and long, and when it fell out I didn't leave the house for a week." Then she sought out one of the classes at Hospital San Martin. "If you have makeup on, you feel better," Castro said. Makeup tips include techniques for covering extremely dark circles, drawing on eyebrows where none remain, and wrapping headscarves so they won't slip off smooth skin.

But while some burn out and quit, the financial rewards are a major incentive, with new recruits at investment banks in London starting on a salary of about US$80,000 (NT$2.4 million) a year. "Even if you don't have any urgent work, you are required to stay late. The culture feeds itself," said a former intern at Merrill Lynch who secured a job but quit after a year with work-related repetitive strain injury.
