A troop of waddling penguins, an annual winter attraction at Asahiyama Zoo here in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, is pulling in the crowds.

About a dozen king penguins tottered past onlookers on Dec. 20, the first day of the "marching penguins" that will be held daily until mid-March.

The penguins completed their 500-meter parade in about 30 minutes.

The event is held only during winter when the ground is covered with snow so the birds don’t injure their feet.

The penguins will march twice a day at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. through February, and once a day in March.
