Charitable activities display the kindness of Taiwan's people

When a magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck China's Sichuan province in 2008, Taiwan responded by donating around NT$7 billion in aid and sending hundreds of tons of supplies. Then, three years later, when a magnitude-9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunami devastated large areas of Japan, Taiwan reacted by donating about NT$7.7 billion in aid, the most of any nation in the world.

In the past few years, Taiwan has been making international headlines and earning the gratitude of its neighbors by offering them help when they are dealing with scarcely imaginable catastrophes. And this generosity was on display again recently after Sichuan province was once more struck by tragedy.

On April 20, parts of Sichuan province were devastated when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Lushan in Ya'an City. This powerful quake killed 193 people and injured around 12,000 others. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Taiwan's government, charitable groups and individual citizens again responded by donating money and supplies to help those who were suffering.

Perhaps the most notable fact about the aid that Taiwan has sent to its neighbors in recent years is that the vast majority of it has come from private businesses and citizens. After the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, 90 percent of the aid from Taiwan came from private donors. And although Taiwan's government last month donated approximately NT$30 million to help with relief efforts in Sichuan province, this figure is being dwarfed by the amounts being given by private donors.

In total, Taiwan has donated or has promised to donate around NT$1 billion to help with relief efforts, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman Fan Liqing said. Fan passed on China's appreciation to Taiwan for the outpouring of concern and aid in the wake of the disaster.

Taiwanese charities have also responded by providing necessities to the victims of this year's Sichuan earthquake. For example, Taiwan's Red Cross Society has sent supplies to China, including 5,000 blankets and 500 tents.

FOREIGN AID PROJECTS

It is important to note that Taiwan's generosity is not limited to helping countries when they experience natural disasters. Taiwan's government has been helping its diplomatic allies and other developing countries for many years.

The instances of this aid are too numerous to mention; however, there are many examples from just this year. In recent weeks, Taiwan and a U.S.-based foundation launched a project aimed at reducing the impact of natural disasters in Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic.
