Accept 意為「接受；答應；同意」，而 receive 意為「接受；收到；接到」，兩者都有接受的意思，但含意卻大不同。
Accept 表示接受者處於主動的地位，而且高興地接受，如 The students are here to accept the award. (學生來這裡領獎)；Chris accepted my suggestion in principle. (克里斯原則上接受我的建議)；His sister accepted the job without hesitation. (他妹妹毫不猶豫地接受這份工作)。
Receive 表示接受者處於被動的地位，不管接受者願意與否，反正就是收到某樣東西，如 Have you received my email yet? (你收到我的電子郵件了嗎?)；It is more blessed to give than to receive. (施比受更有福)；She’s just received my birthday present. (她剛收到我的生日禮物)。
再強調一次，receive 僅表示收到，至於接不接受則另當別論，如 I have received her invitation but I will not go. (我已收到她的邀請，但我不會去)。此外，必須注意的是，receive 的受詞若是人，則表示歡迎、接待的意思，此時接待者是處於主動的地位，如 My students received me cordially. (我的學生熱忱地接待我)。
若把這兩個字放在同一句子中，它們之間的差異將會更加顯而易見：
- Benjamin’s received an invitation from his students but he doesn’t want to accept it. (班傑明收到了他學生的邀請，但他並不想赴約)
- I received a gift from Michael, but did not accept it. (我收到麥可的禮物，但未接受)
