EVOLVING CHARACTERS
"Catching Fire" is definitely darker than the first film, according to actress Jennifer Lawrence. The people of Panem saw Katniss and Peeta take a stand after they won the Hunger Games, "and it puts her and her family in a lot of danger," she said, adding that "the movie is actually quite heavy — Suzanne Collins didn't pull any punches in her books and I admire her for that, so we're trying not to as well."
Katniss' sister Prim, played by Willow Shields, grows up a bit in this movie and plays a more important role in the story. "She's definitely following in her mom's footsteps by becoming a healer," Shields said. "It's a really different character to play. There are not a lot of roles out there like this. It's also really interesting to start with that first movie and grow up, change and have to act differently. I started when I was 10 and I'm 13 now, so it's a big difference."
In the first "Hunger Games" film, Peeta was a little too weak for actor Josh Hutcherson's taste, needing a lot of help from Katniss, but in "Catching Fire" he starts demonstrating his own talents. "Peeta steps it up," Hutcherson said. "As the series goes on, my favorite part about Peeta is the character really evolves in an interesting way."
Rock star/actor Lenny Kravitz is also back in "Catching Fire" to play Katniss' stylist Cinna. Kravitz feels that his character really believes in the heroine, "even though it's not really what he's supposed to be doing," he said. "He's supposed to be making her clothes and that's probably about it." Yet their bond becomes even stronger in the sequel, according to Kravitz. "He begins to, in his own way, rebel by making certain political statements with her clothing, etc., and really supporting her."
For Lawrence, returning to the "Hunger Games" series meant she had plenty of stunts to do. In one scene, for example, Lawrence plunges into water as Katniss begins another round of the Hunger Games. However, it's the more conventional stunt work — like running — that Lawrence finds most difficult.
"Running is always just hard for me because I run like an idiot. Once I hit myself in the face with my bow so hard that I flung myself backwards," she explained. "It's never the complicated stuff that gets me — it's normally just the basic running that always brings me down."
