"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" is a lot like "Jurassic Park," except that in place of dinosaurs you have these strange Foodimals. Yes, the remnants of the food storm in the first movie have turned into living things. These creatures come in a variety of different forms, such as "Watermelephants" and "Cheesepiders."
The Foodimals are the best thing about the sequel. They are really inventive and look incredible. "When we were recording all of the voices for the movie, we only saw drawings of the Foodimals. We didn't see them in action until a year and a half into creating the film," said Hader. "They're pretty amazing."
"Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" offers food puns aplenty. Instead of worrying that their boat has sprung a "leak," our heroes worry that their boat has sprung a "leek." And when a character notes that something is a "piece of cake," well, you can expect an actual piece of cake to appear on the screen.
For directors Pearn and Cameron, coming up with the food puns was the fun part. Before they started making the film, Pearn explained, he and Cameron spent a day thinking of food puns and then carving up foods into a variety of different shapes. They then photographed them in the sun and used them to show the studio their ideas for the film.
The characters in "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" are charming, even if the story doesn't always give them a lot to do. Steve the monkey is as funny as he was in the first movie. Chester is a great villain, and actors Forte and Hader have great chemistry together. "The way Forte and Bill play off each other is just really fun to listen to," said Cameron.
The film has so much energy and color that it makes the discomfort of wearing 3D glasses seem worth it. More importantly, "Cloudy 2" takes a step away from photo-realistic drawings. Recently, it seems that big-budget animation studios have become obsessed with creating cartoons that look real, with much success. But "Cloudy 2" embraces a crazy world of beautiful, bright colors.
