Experience this beautiful and genuinely funny animated tale

How you view "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" will largely depend on what you expect from animated movies. If you enjoy films that are beautiful to look at and genuinely funny, you might think that "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" is a masterpiece. However, if you hope that these movies also actually say something important, you will probably be a little disappointed.

The follow-up to the 2009 hit faced the almost impossible task of trying to match the wonderful storytelling of the original, which was based on the 1978 children's book written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett. The sequel, directed by Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, is not based on a book. And although it is as gorgeous to look at as the first film, these pretty pictures are hardly worth a thousand words.

To recap, at the end of the last movie Flint Lockwood (voiced by Bill Hader) had saved the world by bravely stopping his out-of-control food-creating machine, with the help of his brainy friend Sam, his loyal monkey Steve and his dad Tim. The sequel begins exactly eight minutes later, with Flint's hometown of Swallow Falls facing a huge cleanup job from the giant food storm created by the food-creating machine, which is called the FLDSMDFR, short for the Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator.

For the sequel, there is a new villain: Chester V (voiced by Will Forte), who is the head of Live Corp. This tech company and Chester are clearly modeled after Apple and Steve Jobs. Chester brings Flint and his friends to Live Corp.'s headquarters, where young inventors are meeting with Chester.

Flint thinks Chester wants his know-how, but all Chester really wants is the FLDSMDFR so that he can use it for his own evil purposes. So he sends Flint back to Swallow Falls, where he and his loyal friends soon discover that the FLDSMDFR is not only alive but has created seemingly monstrous "Foodimals" — a combination of the words "food" and "animals." The only problem: they're actually not that monstrous, especially the strawberries and marshmallows, which are really cute.
